What do Situational Judgement Tests assess?
A Situational Judgement Test or SJT is a type of psychometric test that presents candidates with real-life work situations and then asks them to decide on the best response to that situation. The Firefighter SJT is a situational judgement test that is specifically geared towards firefighter applicants, trainee firefighters, and operational firefighters.

Overview of the Firefighter SJT
Our Firefighter SJT presents candidates with 16 distinct situations that firefighter applicants, trainee firefighters, and operational firefighters may find familiar. For each situation, candidates taking the test are asked to review four possible responses and select one response they consider ‘most appropriate’ and another as the ‘least appropriate’. As with all our SJTs, the Firefighter SJT is untimed but typically takes up to 15 minutes to complete.
Fire and rescue services use SJTs and other assessments to support their recruitment and development processes. This is because SJTs are a highly effective way to assess how candidates are likely to respond to realistic operational, training, and team-based challenges. Firefighting roles require sound judgement, professionalism, teamwork, and the ability to remain effective under pressure, so employers use SJTs to help identify candidates who possess the behaviours and competencies required to succeed.
Firefighter SJT Competencies:
1. Teamwork: Building and maintaining effective working relationships through clear communication, active listening, teamwork, and calm negotiation.
2. Situational Awareness: Gathering relevant information, identifying risks, applying training knowledge, and using sound judgement to make effective decisions.
3. Operational Readiness: Managing self, tasks, and responsibilities effectively by staying composed, prioritising work, adapting to change, and seeking development.
4. Safety Discipline: Demonstrating integrity, reliability, accountability, and commitment to procedures, safety, and professional standards.
Each competency comprises 4 behavioural indicators, and each indicator is measured by a specific question in the Firefighter SJT. This ensures a comprehensive and valid assessment of the competency. It also ensures that the interpretive reports provided are accurate and meaningful.

2. Candidate Report, where the content is designed for a candidate(s) and provides feedback on the test performance. This report provides behavioural interpretation and suggests development goals for improving their competencies.
3. Interview Report, where the content is designed for conducting a deep-dive interview, utilising the test results. This report provides tests scores, behavioural interpretation, in depth interview questions and detail on how to analyse, interpret and score interview responses.
How to do well in your Firefighter SJT
To do well in our Firefighter SJT, it is good to implement the following tips:
1. Read the full situation carefully: Make sure you fully understand the details of the scenario before reviewing the response options, as small details can affect which response is most appropriate.
2. Prioritise safety and procedure: The strongest responses are often those that balance initiative with safe working practices, operational procedures, and professional judgement.
3. Think about teamwork and communication: Firefighting is highly team-oriented, so the most appropriate responses will often involve clear communication, collaboration, and supporting others while remaining calm under pressure.
4. Avoid impulsive or avoidant responses: The least appropriate responses are often those that either rush into action without enough information or responsibility, or avoid taking appropriate action when it is needed.
