What do Situational Judgement Tests assess?
A Situational Judgement Test or SJT is a type of psychometric test that presents candidates with real-life work situations and then asks them to decide on the best response to that situation. The Barista SJT is a situational judgement test that is specifically geared towards situations that someone serving food and drinks to customers may encounter.
Overview of the Barista SJT
The Barista Situational Judgment Test (SJT) is a tailored assessment tool designed to evaluate key behaviours and skills critical for success in a Barista role. It presents candidates with realistic workplace scenarios specific to the challenges of a Barista position, such as managing customer interactions, resolving customer requests, adapting to challenges, and demonstrating reliability. For each scenario, candidates are provided with four potential responses, each representing a plausible course of action. Candidates are required to identify the response they believe to be the ' most appropriate' and the 'least appropriate' to the situation.
Each question is aligned with essential skills like effective communication, flexibility, collaboration, and maintaining hygiene standards. By using realistic, multiple-choice scenarios, the SJT assesses a candidate’s ability to think critically, act responsibly, and navigate workplace challenges with professionalism. This makes it an ideal tool for employers to identify candidates who are well-matched to their organisational culture and possess the potential to thrive in fast-paced, customer-focused environments. Like all our SJTs, the Barista SJT is untimed, allowing candidates to approach each scenario thoughtfully. Most candidates complete the test within approximately 15 minutes.
The Barista SJT measures 4 competencies / behaviours:
1. Positive Engagement: Engaging in meaningful and positive interactions with customers and colleagues.
2. Situational & Customer Awareness: Assessing the environment, anticipating customer’ needs, and responding proactively to maintain operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.
3. Achieving Outcomes: Consistently delivering high-quality results while managing responsibilities and adapting to dynamic work conditions.
4. Acting Reliably: Demonstrating dependability, accountability, adhering to company rules and standards and respect in all aspects of work.

How to do well in your Barista SJT
To do well in a Barista SJT, it is good to implement the following tips...
1. Understand the Role: Familiarise yourself with the key skills and responsibilities of a Barista, such as excellent customer service, teamwork, food hygiene and managing tasks efficiently. This understanding will help you select responses that align with the expectations of the role.
2. Think Like a Team Player: Many scenarios in the Barista SJT focus on collaboration and supporting colleagues. When choosing your responses, consider how your actions can positively impact both your team and customers.
3. Stay Calm and Logical: The Barista role can be challenging and involves handling customer complaints and prioritising tasks during busy periods. Focus on solutions that show professionalism, respect, and the ability to balance competing priorities effectively.
When completing an SJT, remember that the best responses often demonstrate a balance between practical problem-solving and alignment with the company’s values. Effective answers show your ability to prioritise tasks, communicate clearly, and maintain a positive working environment, all while considering the needs of both customers and colleagues. It’s not just about resolving issues but also about showcasing professionalism, empathy, and sound judgment in dynamic situations.
