What do Advanced Numerical Reasoning Tests assess?
Advanced Numerical Reasoning Tests are a common assessment in competitive recruitment. They are frequently used for roles where decisions rely on quantitative judgement—such as consulting, finance, law, operations, and leadership—but are relevant anywhere analytical thinking is required. For example, advanced numerical reasoning skills are evident when:
1. Analysing Patterns: Candidates identify and extend numerical sequences by detecting underlying rules (e.g., alternating operations, changing differences, or hidden square/prime structures).
2. Solving Ratio & Mixture Problems: Candidates manipulate proportions and quantities, adjust one component, and re-balance to achieve a target ratio or outcome.
3. Making Quantitative Deductions: Candidates allocate budgets or amounts subject to multiple constraints (e.g., fixed totals and whole-number conditions), drawing sound conclusions from limited time and information.
Overview of the Advanced Numerical Reasoning Test
This assessment presents a single mixed set of questions that measure higher-level numerical reasoning under time pressure.
1. Series Completion: Identify the rule and continue numerical sequences.
2. Computation (Ratios & Mixtures): Apply proportional reasoning to reach a specified ratio or volume.
3. Argument Analysis (Allocations & Constraints): Determine the valid allocation that satisfies all numerical conditions.

How to do well in your Advanced Numerical Reasoning Test
To do well in an Advanced Numerical Reasoning test, consider the following tips...
1. Scan and classify quickly: Decide if each item is a sequence, a ratio/mixture, or an allocation with constraints - this might speed up your choice of method.
2. Use parts and simple checks: Convert ratios to parts, keep arithmetic tidy in your notes, and verify the final ratio or total matches exactly.
3. Pace yourself: The test is timed; if you cannot see a route within ~40–50 seconds, make your best judgement and move on.
Note, if you run out of time your responses will be automatically submitted based on the answers you have provided up to that point.
